It's August, art lovers! The end of summer is drawing near. But, not to worry! There are still plenty of art classes, theatre performances, and other events happening this month. August 1st

Avenue Q


The Red Barn Theatre of Frankfort, Indiana presents the Tony Award winning musical, Avenue Q! Meet a group of 20-something puppets trying to find their way in the Big Apple. The show features plenty of show stopping numbers and laugh out loud humor. Performances are held on Wednesdays through Saturdays at 8 pm and plays on Sundays at 2 pm.

9 to 5: The Musical


The Crawfordsville Sugar Creek Players present 9 to 5: The Musical! Pushed to the boiling point by their supervisor, three female co-workers concoct a plan to get even with the sexist, egotistical, lying bigot they call their boss.  They conspire to take control of their company and learn there's nothing they can't do.  Set in the 1980's, this hilarious musical is outrageous, thought provoking, and even a little romantic. Performances will be held beginning August 1st and continue until August 10th. Friday and Saturday performances are at 7:30 pm and Sunday performances are at 2 pm.

Murder at Cafe Noir



The most popular mystery dinner show in the country, Murder at Cafe Noir has delighted
audiences since its premiere in 1989. This forties detective story come to life features Rick Archer, P.I., out to find a curvaceous runaway on the forgotten island of Mustique, a place stuck in a black and white era. The audience votes twice on what they want Rick to do next and these decisions change the flow of this comic tribute to the Bogart era. The show runs  August 1st, 2nd, 8th, and 9th.

August 2nd

OUTfest


OUTfest, Lafayette’s annual pride festival hosted by Pride Lafayette, aims to increase public awareness of the LGBTI community in Lafayette and beyond, bring attention to LGBTI issues, provide resources, and celebrate diversity. The event will feature music, food, and other activities! The event will be held in downtown Lafayette from 4 pm-midnight.

14th Annual Cultural Summer Arts Classes for Adults and Children

The National Center for Great Lakes Native American Culture, Inc

Two and a half day classes will be held August 2nd, 3rd, and 4th in river cane flutes, paddle-stamped pottery, trade silver, porcupine quill work, Iroquois beading, cattail weaving, steel-bladed knives and Great Lakes Native American culture.  Children's classes are included also with 15 hours instruction.  Pre-registration is required by July 25.  $75 NCGLNAC members, $95 non-members.  Contact Kay Neumayr at kay.neumayr@ncglnac.com or 765-426-3022.

Studio B Dance Auditions


Be a part of the first Studio b Dance Team! The objective of the Studio b dance team is to provide a team experience that will enhance the dancer's technical abilities, provide them with community performance opportunities, connect them to innovative choreographers and experienced professional dancers through convention workshops, and allow for growth as a performer with the critique that comes from a competitive setting. Students age 10-17 are welcome to audition.

Art in the Park
Join Art in the Park at Memorial Island, located in Columbian Park, every other Wednesday during the summer art and music series as we enjoy local art, music, food and family fun. The event will be held on August 6th from 6:30-8:30 pm. 


Delphi Opera House Gallery Exhibit

Delphi Opera House

Antique perfume bottles and pastels/oils of landscapes and still life will be on exhibit at the Delphi Opera House Gallery.  With an artful eye for beauty, Ginny Emerson has been collecting antiqueperfume bottles for over 3 decades. Pam Newell will exhibit her beautiful impressionistic paintings.  Theopening reception will be Wednesday, August 6 from 4:00-7:00 followed by the history and slide show of the perfume bottles presented by Elaine McConnell with photos by Alan McConnell in the "sanctuary" of the DOH2.   

August 7th

Pottery Painting Workshop

Pottery Painting Workshop!

The workshop will be held at the Max Tannenbaum Cultural Center in Crawfordsville at 6:30-8:30 pm on August 7th. Paint a summer theme on your ceramic items. Be crafty, be creative!  Enjoy a cool pottery painting art class and escape the heat for an evening! Purchase price includes your item to paint, use of the glazes and the final firing in our kiln. Items can be picked up at the Rotary Jail Museum next to the Tannenbaum Cultural Center, during regular hours of operations Wednesday thru Saturday 10-5. Bring your paper ticket or pay at the door!

This workshop will be held at the Max Tannenbaum Center in Crawfordsville, Indiana at 6:30-8:30 pm. Create small fused glass item or items of your choice! Sun catcher? Jewelry? Small bowl or plate? Nightlight? ($3 extra) You get to choose! If you want to create a medium or a large item, or include dichroic glass (and we have a new shipment!) you can simply pay to upgrade on site at the time of the class. Glass items can also be fitted with hooks for wall mounting, or magnets for decorative metal mounting!

Girls' Night Out Art Class



A 'wine and canvas' event at Artists' Own in downtown Lafayette. Grab some girlfriends and enjoy time together creating and enjoying a glass of wine. The instructor will walk you through step by step. Wear paint friendly clothes.

William Shakespeare's Twelfth Night



Kokomo Civic Theare presents Shakespeare's, "Twelfth Night". Brother and sister Viola and Sebastian, who look a great deal alike, are in a shipwreck, and both think the other dead. When she lands in a foreign country, Viola dresses as her brother and adopts the name Cesario, becoming trusted friend to the Count Orsino. Orsino is madly in love with the lady Olivia. He sends Cesario to do his wooing, and Olivia falls in love with the disguised maiden. Things get even more complicated when Sebastian surfaces in the area. With an ending that underlines that love can win out over all, Twelfth Night is funny, poignant, and an insightful take on the battle of the sexes. Breaking Up is Hard to Do


Myers Dinner Theatre presents "Breaking Up Is Hard To Do”. The play is set at a Catskills resort in the early 1960’s.  It is the sweet, comic story of Lois and Marge, two friends from Brooklyn, in search of good times and romance over one wild Labor Day weekend. August 9th


Friendship House Annual Bazaar and Bakesale
This event features crafts from local artisans, baked goods, a cake walk, raffles, door prizes, and much more! There will also be lunch available for sale. We are donating 10% of all sales to the Bauer Family Food Pantry. Other proceeds go towards events and activities for Friendship House residents. The event will be held at 10 am-2 pm at the Friendship House South Dining Room in West Lafayette. For more information, click here

Mommy and Me Art Classes


This class will be offered twice and is designed for parent and child (ages 4-8) to enjoy the creative process together and learn a little about an artist's technique. No cleanup for you; just enjoy the process with your child. Two sessions will be offered at 10:30-12:00 pm and 1:00-2:30 pm at the Artists' Own studios on August 9th. Mosey for the Arts


Mosey Down Main Street is a series of street celebrations brought to you by the local artistic community.  Volunteers, downtown business owners, artists and musicians come together once a month from May through September to offer a free family friendly event that takes place right down the center of Main Street.
With three stages of music, outdoor food, beer, and wine sales as well as street performers, sidewalk chalk and hand made Hula hoops, Drum circles and DJ's, belly dancers, and balloon animals.
The event will last from 6-11pm on August 9th!
Taste of Cass County
Logan's Landing presents the ninth annual Taste of Cass County on Saturday August 9th starting at 5 pm in downtown Logansport. Enjoy live music, food and drink from 15 local vendors, and a Kids Korner with games and prizes. Visit the website, for more information.

Art Exhibit Opening and Reception


Make plans to join us at the Wells Community Cultural Center on August 15 for an opening reception! Come to the reception from 6:00-8:00 pm to meet the artists and see their work. The exhibition will run from August 15 through September 12.

River City Grapes and Hops Fest


Attendees will have the opportunity to taste products from local breweries and vineyards. Music provided by the Knickerbocker Saloon. Food will be available for purchase from Sovereign Catering. All proceeds go to support the Tippecanoe County Historical Association's mission to create a sense of place in the present and propel us toward the future with hope and commitment through understanding of our past. The event lasts from 4-8 pm.

Athen's Art Gallery Workshop


Workshop for August: "pretty little blossoms" - painting story mandalas with Kelly Barton on 
August 16, 10am -12:30pm$45 includes all supplies (payable to Athens Arts). In this workshop, you will create a blossom. Kelly will guide you, building on each layer, creating a blossom rich in your own story. For artists on all levels. The event takes place at the Athen's Art Gallery in Crawfordsville.

Pysanky Workshop: The Art of Ukrainian Style Easter Eggs



Artists' Own will hold an egg painting class from 10:00-1:00 pm on August 16th. Pysankys are intricate colorful designs created on the egg shell through the layering of beeswax and dyes. The geometric shapes, floral and animal figures, and even the eggs, are steeped in symbolism. Over 2000 years ago, before the time of Christ, people decorated eggs believing that great powers were embodied in the egg. With the advent of Christianity, Easter eggs symbolized the Resurrection and a promise of eternal life. Legend has it that as long as pysankyare decorated, goodness will prevail over evil throughout the world. Participants will be introduced to the rich tranditions and history of the art of Pysanky. Using an egg shell (chicken, pre-blown and prepared), students will complete a simple star-burst design, with the traditional batik method using kistka, bees wax, dyes,and candle. Jewelry Workshop



A jewelry design class will take place at Artists' Own in Lafayette on August 22nd at 6:30-8:00 pm. This class is a fun, design-your-own-jewelry opportunity! Glass artist Lisa Walsh will demonstrate her line of changeable bead jewelry, including bracelets, earrings, pendants, and rings. Participants will then have the opportunity to design pieces of their choice using her handmade flameworked glass beads. Beers Across the Wabash

Friends of Downtown is proud to present the 3rd Annual Beers Across the Wabash.  Join us for a fantastic afternoon of sampling craft brews from 25-30 of Indiana's finest small breweries.  The event will be held at the Reihle Plaza in downtown Lafayette on August 23rd at 2:00-6:00 pm. In addition to delicious beers, admission includes a commemorative sample cup and live entertainment by Zimdiana, The Flapjacks, Billy Brand and others throughout the afternoon.  Look for homebrewing information and demonstrations from Tippecanoe Homebrewers Circle and Homebrewing Organization of Purdue Students.  On-site food service will also be available for purchase from D&R Catering; Outpost Catering by Sgt. Prestons and The Lafayette Optimist Club.

Taste of Montgomery County



The 8th Taste of Montgomery County comes to Crawfordsville on Saturday, August 23, 2014!
The Taste of Montgomery County is a panorama of sights, a symphony of sounds, and a festival of flavors that represent all that’s great about our little corner of the Midwest. Every year in late summer, restaurants, caterers and food vendors from throughout Montgomery County will gather on the shady, rolling hills of the General Lew Wallace Study & Museum to showcase a huge variety of their tastiest treats and most mouthwatering morsels.To add some sound bites to the food bites, the Taste will also host three musical acts—live and direct from the heartland—that represent three different musical genres. From jazz to country, oldies to folk to rock and roll, the Taste features terrific tunes to satisfy almost every palate. The event will take place at 12:00 pm-10:00 pm.


All American Purdue Marching Band Show



Catch the debut of the 2014 “All-American” Marching Band at this great concert. Bring a lawn chair and be the first to see the best band in the land! The event will take place at Hull Field at 7:30 pm.

Two tours of the Haan Mansion Museum of Indiana Art will be held on August 23rd. The tours will be held at 10:30 am and 1:30 pm. Glass Art Workshop



A Glass Art Workshop will take place at Artists' Own in Lafayette on August 23rd at 10:00 am-12:00 pm. In this class, participants will create their own treasure bead using the empty flameworked hollows handmade by Lisa. Participants pick a hollow of the size and color they want, then customize their bead with the filling, caps and dangles of their choice. The beads can be made into miniature ornaments, pendants, or fan pulls and come with a presentation case suitable for gift giving. A large array of fillings will be provided, but participants are also invited to bring their own tiny treasures from home. No torch or flame is involved for this class, but participants will see a short presentation of how the glass hollow is made. Find Your Voice Writing Class



A writer's voice is distinct from everyone else-it is how a character expresses herself and it is the words and sentences the author uses. In this workshop we will learn how to develop and deepen our unique voices by examining a variety of modes of writing and analyzing the voices of works we admire. We will also work on exercises to further our understanding of our own distinctive way of expressing ourselves through the written word. Please bring with you a story/novel or poem by another author whose voice you admire, and wish to explore. The class will be held at the MatchBOX Coworking Studio in downtown Lafayette at 6:30-9:00 pm.

Stencils in Watercolor Class

Delphi Opera House

Register by August 26 for class with Rena Brouwer. Natural and handmade stencils are studied to enhance your watercolors in either an abstract or a realistic approach. Black Cultural Center Student Orientation

Connect with the BCC to begin the celebration of our fall theme "Unmasking Blackness Through Rhythm, Culture and Celebration."  Boilerfest will introduce you to the BCC, various student organizations, and campus support services.  It will feature a live DJ, performances by BCC ensembles, carnival dancers and food representative of Trinidad/Brazilian culture and cuisine.  Planeta Azul Samba band from Chicago will be performing. The event will take place at the BCC parking lot from 4:00-6:00 pm.

The Importance of Being Earnest

The Lafayette Civic Theatre presents Oscar Wilde's The Importance of Being Earnest. 
 In a stylish send-up of Victorian courtship and manners, charming bachelors, Jack and Algernon, lead double lives to woo the two young ladies who have won their hearts. When they are caught in their lies, the stage is set for clever manipulations and hilarious confusion.
Oscar Wilde dishes up scathing social satire, effervescent wit, and high farce, making this one of the most cherished plays in the English language. The play will run from August 29th-September 13th at the Historic Monon Depot Theatre. Friday and Saturday performances will take place at 7:30 pm and Sunday performances will take place at 2:30 pm.

Global Fest
The Morton Community Center will feature a special Global Fest on August 30th at 10:00 am-9:00 pm. This free one-day festival celebrates our diverse community and world cultures through music, dance, crafts, displays and international food. 

Mosey Down Main Street

Mosey Down Main Street is a series of street celebrations brought to you by the local artistic community.  Volunteers, downtown business owners, artists and musicians come together once a month from May through September to offer a free family friendly event that takes place right down the center of Main Street.
