Casualties of War

Various Media

East Gallery

The work in this show is based on photographs relating to war, mostly of soldiers who have died in Iraq and Afghanistan. “To me, there is a sadness in photographic portraits, a suggestion of mortality, all the more true when we know that those we see pictured have indeed died. If there is a purpose to my work it is to express this feeling-- and the ultimate futility and waste of not just this war but any war—emphasized somehow by the process of reproducing into another medium,” states the artist.

The show consists of oil paintings, etchings and relief prints, and digital drawings. Jim Binkley is a professor of agricultural economics at Purdue University and has taken several Purdue art classes over the years.

Prints and Drawings

West Gallery

Laelle Busch was raised in West Lafayette and received her BFA in printmaking from Washington University in St. Louis in 2008. Her work ranges from representational to abstract, however, it is united by the theme of human interaction with the earth. Fascinated by both the positive and negative effect people have in shaping the earth, she works with natural patterns of growth and accumulation which are meditations on this relationship.

Patterns and Forms: Geometry in Art

Ceramics

Northwest Gallery

This exhibit explores geometry and other mathematical principles in artistic pottery forms. According to the artist, “The intent is to show that art and the sciences are not mutually exclusive! Math and Art are strongly linked, with synergistic and rich relationships. Mathematics is not just theoretical; it is imbedded in many patterns and forms which are actively present around us. It has a beauty and vitality which offers a flexible structure for creative exploration and expression. This exhibit links the two through the forms, and includes summary explanations of the associated math, as well as some interactive exercises.”
