What do you think?

How do you think the Cultural Plan is going?

  1. Does anyone want to start a discussion?

I speak for the younger (thirty something) members that are engaged in this discussion. We consider ourselves do-ers and have little patience for meetings for the sake of having meetings.

Our sub-committee has met twice now regarding the best way to bring the cultural plan to the community. We have collectively decided that there are two best ways to accomplish this goal; 1) actually get out in the community and DO something (be that community art, music, etc) and 2) mass communication. Archaic and uneffective angles would include additional printed material, which is not only cost prohibitive but also often overlooked completely.

As far as the issues are concerned, parcel Districting is always a bad idea, someone will always be on the other side of the fence so to speak. We do not need photo opportunities, we need real culture. As one of our members already pointed out, the River has been a natural barrier, or wall if you will, that has already divided us (downtown/west side/levee). At some point we have to ask ourselves; Are we serious about creating a more diverse and vibrant community, or do we want to pretend that we are? This is my question.

I am committed to seeing this process through. I know there are others that are very in tune with what the vision should look like, and there are those that are out of touch with the realities of our situation. How do we further the goals of the former while enlightening the ideals of the later? After all, our seriousness will be judged by our ability to work together and be productive.

I am going to start by organizing public art outings. Look for us on the walking bridge soon.

This is a call to action!
