Boilermakers for the Arts

Welcome back, Purdue students! Boiler Gold Rush has begun, which means it's almost time for classes to start. For both new and older students, it is the perfect time to think about joining an organization and getting more involved in campus life, particularly in the arts. Purdue has a wide range of clubs and organizations that focus in on music, fine art, dance, and more!

Below are clubs listed from A-Z that are arts and culture based organizations on Purdue's campus.

Art History Student Organization

The Purdue University Art History Student Organization's mission is simple: we strive to offer students as well as the community an institution where education and personal enjoyment combine to celebrate the arts.

AHSO is made up of students who are interested in art history; membership is not restricted to art history majors, in fact, we encourage students in any area to participate in our organization. The organization presents a film and video series, organizes trips to museums, galleries and lecture events, and brings guest speakers to the department for the benefit of students and faculty. Students are urged to participate in the student organizations because they provide an excellent opportunity to gain broadening experiences, including leadership positions.

We want to continue the PIDC legacy and make friends as well as family along the way! No earlier dance experience is required. We are here to teach you, learn from you and have a great time. If you like to dance or want to help out in any way, or just want to have some fun, then please don't hesitate to contact us. New Kids on the Block

Congratulations to Carnahan Hall as they join the arts community here in Lafayette! The ribbon cutting ceremony takes place this afternoon at 3:30 pm. You must have obtained a physical ticket to attend the ceremony.

With Carnahan Hall joining the TAF family, we decided to feature some of our new member organizations that have been added this year. Be sure  to show them your support!

Art Cenacle

Art Cenacle is a local group of artists in Lafayette who meet regularly to discuss art related topics and critique each others' works. Their work will be featured in our newest exhibition here at TAF. The exhibit is titled "Expression Unlimited: An Exhibition of Self Portraits". In a recent Journal & Courier interview, the group says that "the artists gave each other the assignment to do a self-portrait, whether or not they felt experienced or comfortable enough to do it. With so many personalities and interpretations, their exhibit is disorienting in a good way."

Be sure to stop by and check out their work! The exhibit will be open to the public from August 15th to September 12th and a reception will be held tonight from 6-8 pm in the TAF Lobby. Be sure to stop by!

Lafayette Writer's Studio

Lafayette Writers' Studio is a place where writers can learn more about the art and craft of writing in a supportive environment. Whether you have a particular writing project in mind or are simply interested in learning more about the form, the Lafayette Writers' Studio will provide instruction and encouragement to develop your unique voice and help you become the writer you would like to be.

Classes are taught by Melissa Fraterrigo. Melissa taught high school English, but realized that her dream was to be a writer. She went on to receive her MFA and publish her first collection of short stories in 2006. Besides teaching with the Lafayette Writers' Studio, she is currently working on a writing project titled, "Teensy's Daughter". Her classes have helped aspiring writers to make their dreams possible.

"Taking a writing class was very outside of my comfort zone and writing my memoir seemed only like a dream. Yet Melissa helped me to see that anyone who writes is a writer. With Melissa's encouragement, writing exercises, and feedback, I am thrilled to say my once far fetched dream is now a reality!"

Make your writing dreams come true as well! There are several classes being offered in the fall! All classes will be offered at MatchBOX Coworking Studio in Lafayette.  Click here to register for a class today!

Special Hands School of Art

The Special Hands School of Art is designed for students with special needs who have an interest in the arts! The school was initiated by special needs advocate Lisa Halsema and art instructor Andrea Remer. The creation of the program was prompted by cuts to arts programs in schools, which had a negative impact on special needs programs for students . As a result, Remer and Halsema decided to create their own school that offered available arts programs for kids.

Artists' Own will hold an egg painting class from 10:00-1:00 pm on August 16th. Pysankys are intricate colorful designs created on the egg shell through the layering of beeswax and dyes. The geometric shapes, floral and animal figures, and even the eggs, are steeped in symbolism. Over 2000 years ago, before the time of Christ, people decorated eggs believing that great powers were embodied in the egg. With the advent of Christianity, Easter eggs symbolized the Resurrection and a promise of eternal life. Legend has it that as long as pysankyare decorated, goodness will prevail over evil throughout the world. Participants will be introduced to the rich tranditions and history of the art of Pysanky. Using an egg shell (chicken, pre-blown and prepared), students will complete a simple star-burst design, with the traditional batik method using kistka, bees wax, dyes, and candle.
